In the beauty industry, hygiene is not just a regulatory requirement; it is your most powerful marketing tool. A client may forgive a slightly imperfect polish application, but they will never return to a dirty salon. In a post-pandemic world, visible sanitation protocols are synonymous with professionalism and care.
Cleaning (Sanitization)
This is the removal of visible debris. Washing tools with soap and water to remove skin, nail dust, or product residue. This must happen before any disinfection can occur. If a tool is dirty, the disinfectant cannot reach the surface.
Disinfection
The chemical process that kills most bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Tools must be fully immersed in an EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectant (like Barbicide) for the specific time recommended by the manufacturer (usually 10 minutes). Spraying alcohol is not sufficient for tools.
Sterilization
The destruction of all microbial life, including spores. This is mandatory for any tool that pierces the skin (like cuticle nippers or microblading blades). An autoclave (heat/pressure) or dry heat sterilizer is the gold standard here.
Critical Rule: Porous items (nail files, buffers, orangewood sticks) cannot be disinfected. They must be single-use only. Give them to the client or throw them away.
Designing the Customer Experience (CX)
Client retention is the metric that determines if your business survives. It costs 5x more to acquire a new client than to keep an existing one. Great CX turns a service into a ritual.
