Anatomy of the Nail & Skin

Before touching a tool, you must understand the canvas. The nail unit is complex, and improper handling can cause permanent damage or infection.

The Nail Plate

The hard, keratinized structure we paint. It is dead tissue, but it is porous. It absorbs water and solvents, which is why dehydration is a critical prep step.

The Matrix

The «root» where the nail is produced, hidden under the skin at the base. Damage here (from aggressive cuticle pushing or drilling) results in permanent ridges or deformities in the growing nail.

The Eponychium vs. Cuticle

Common misconception: The living skin at the base is the eponychium. The cuticle is the dead, white, flaky tissue that sticks to the nail plate. You remove the cuticle; you moisturize the eponychium. Cutting living skin is a major infection risk.

Essential Tool Kit

Quality tools are an investment. Cheap steel dulls quickly and can tear the skin.

Tool Function Maintenance
Cuticle Nippers Trimming dead loose skin (hangnails). Never cut living tissue. Sterilize after every client. Sharpen professionally.
Cuticle Pusher Loosening dead cuticle from the nail plate. Sterilize after every client.
Nail Files Shaping the free edge. Grits: 100 (artificial), 180 (natural), 240 (finishing). Porous = Single Use. Metal/Glass = Disinfectable.
Buffer Block Smoothing the surface and removing shine for adhesion. Porous = Single Use.
Curette Removing debris from nail folds (essential for pedicures). Sterilize after every client.

The 5-Step Hygienic Manicure Workflow

This standard process ensures quality and safety for every service, whether traditional or gel.

01

Analysis & Sanitization

Inspect hands for contraindications (fungus, open wounds). If present, politely refuse service and refer to a doctor. Sanitize both your hands and the client’s.

02

Prep & Shape

Remove old polish. Trim length if requested. File the free edge (move in one direction to prevent splitting, do not «saw» back and forth). Apply cuticle softener.

03

Cuticle Work

Gently push back the eponychium. Use the other end of the pusher to scrape off the dead cuticle from the plate. Carefully nip only hangnails or detached dead skin.

04

Exfoliation & Massage (Spa)

For spa services, apply a scrub to remove dead skin cells from the hands/arms. Rinse. Perform a hand massage with lotion to stimulate circulation and relax the client. Note: If applying gel, do this step AFTER the polish to avoid oil on the nail plate.

05

Polish Application

Dehydrate the nail plate with alcohol/acetone. Apply Base Coat, two layers of Color, and Top Coat. Cap the free edge (paint the tip) to prevent chipping.

Profitability Tip: Add-ons like a paraffin wax dip or a collagen mask cost very little in materials ($1-$2) but can add $10-$15 to the service price.
