The Professional Toolkit
Achieving a professional finish distinguishes a hobbyist from a manufacturer. The right tools ensure structural integrity and aesthetic perfection. Here are the essentials you will need to start.
Essential Application Tools
Bubble Buster Rollers
Also known as aluminum or finned rollers. These are critical for consolidating the laminate. They force air bubbles out and compress the layers of glass and resin. Trapped air is the #1 cause of structural failure (delamination).
Precision Scales
Resin chemistry is exact. You cannot mix «by eye.» A digital gram scale allows you to calculate catalyst ratios (usually 1% to 2%) precisely. Inaccurate mixing leads to parts that never cure or overheat.
Orbital Sanders
Finishing is 80% of the work. A high-quality pneumatic or electric orbital sander is necessary for smoothing edges and preparing surfaces for topcoats. Have grits ranging from 80 (rough) to 1500 (polishing).
Tool Maintenance and Cleaning
Resin cures hard and fast. Once it hardens on a tool, that tool is often ruined.
Acetone Bath: Keep a sealed container of acetone ready. Immediately after use, submerge metal rollers and brushes.
Mechanical Cleaning: Use a wire brush to remove resin from the grooves of bubble rollers before the resin gels.
Dry and Store: Acetone evaporates quickly but is highly flammable. Dry tools completely before storing them away from ignition sources.
