Experto en Fibra de Vidrio: Fabricación de Albercas y Macetas

Understanding the Matrix

The «resin» acts as the glue that holds the glass fibers together, transferring stress between them. Choosing the right resin system affects cost, strength, and water resistance.

Comparative Analysis of Resins

Polyester
Vinylester
Epoxy

The Industry Standard.

Most common for general purpose fiberglass work (boats, tanks, decor).

  • Pros: Lowest cost, easy to use, forgiving mix ratios.
  • Cons: High shrinkage (up to 8%), lower water resistance (osmosis risk), strong styrene smell.
  • Best For: Planters, general parts, molds.

The Exothermic Reaction

What is Exotherm?+

When resin and catalyst mix, a chemical reaction occurs that generates heat. This is called an exothermic reaction. In a thin layer, this heat dissipates. In a thick mass (like a cup left full), the heat can build up enough to melt plastic, crack the resin, or even catch fire.

Managing Heat+

To prevent overheating in thick parts, build up layers (laminates) gradually. Allow the first layers to cool and "gel" before adding more. Never leave a mixed pot of resin unattended.
